Gothic paper mache masks. Making and painting gothic masks tutorial.

Making paper mache masks.

In this tutorial we will show you how to make your own paper mache masks. It's easy, cheap and doesn't require too much time. In fact you can make a few in one day! It is a great project that you can do with your kids as well (some adult supervision requiered).

Step I. Materials and workspace.

To be able to succeed in this endavour you'll need to gather some materials and and equipment all of which can be easily found at home and at your local art supply store.

You will need:

  • - old newspaper (one or two)
  • - tall plastic containers (two)
  • - white glue (two or three bottles)
  • - cheesecloth (to strain water)
  • - wire mesh (size of a mask)
  • - paintbrush (medium-small)
  • - cake pan (aluminum, disposable)
  • - aluminum foil
  • - handheld blender
  • - modeling clay or wax
  • - plaster or paris (medium size)
  • - liquid rubber compound
  • (for making flexible molds)
  • - water
  • - freezer and oven

  • Your workplace

Although there are no major preparations required, we would suggest covering your work surface with wax paper. This will eliminate the problem of things getting stuck to the table and will make clean up fast and painless.

Since at some point you will be working with liquid rubber conpound one might consider a pair of gloves to keep hands clean.

The last advise is to make sure that your waste basket is empty and is within reach :)
